Campaign for Cirencester parish church

Repair, renew, revive, enjoy!

The Town Hall (now in daily use as the South Porch of Cirencester Parish Church) – unique, historic, full of potential for the future: but its existence is threatened.  So much can be said, and has been said about this building which still dominates the centre of Cirencester.  In ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’, Simon Jenkins describes the building as ‘exceptionally grand’ and gives it his five star rating.

Although a part of the Church, the Town Hall is an unconsecrated building with a long history of use by the townspeople.  In its many roles it has served as a tavern, a schoolroom, a court-room and a town hall.

Sadly, it is now suffering from the effects of pollution and poor repair work from the 1950s.  The hard cement renders used then have led to serious damage.  They are breaking away from the building, sometimes taking original stone with them, and leaving damaged areas exposed. Intervention is urgently needed to halt this process and secure the Town Hall’s future.

Not only is it a unique building in desperate need of repair and conservation, but it is also a resource which we need to bring back to life by restoring it to its rightful position at the heart of community life in the centre of Cirencester.

Our vision

  • To save the Town Hall by carrying out the urgent repair work required.
  • To create free visitor access to the work site during the project.
  • To preserve the building for the future.
  • To make it the exciting focal point of a renewed Marketplace.
  • To provide a space for community use at the heart of the town.
  • To work with schools and local people to bring the Town Hall back to life.
    Estimated cost: £1,500,000

We’re over half way there!  Can you help?
